Landscape lighting – A Basic Overview
There are a lot of factors that go into the planning and execution of your landscape lighting ideas and and landscape lighting design features of your home or business, but one the cheapest and most effective ways to improve the visual fidelity and value of your home or business is to add tasteful landscape lighting.
Unlike the old days of basic landscaping and landscape lighting, modern fixtures of today come in a huge variety of shapes and colors as well as technical features, so as long as there is a nearby socket for you to plug into you can have a tasteful and even energy efficient way to light up your home and your homes surroundings as the evening approaches into the night.
With the advent of increased garden and home improvement shows, the lighting of one’s home has risen dramatically in popularity, which is great because there are more products available to you than ever before at reasonable prices. Some of the various things you can do for starters is lighting up a stone stepped pathway, one that possibly leads to a pool or spa area that you can gently light around the area to give it a high end look which you can adjust for mood and atmosphere. If you live in a colder region but want something tasteful and functional outdoors you can install a sunken fireplace to give off a warm glow and keep company warm in a cold day congregating outside. If you’re in more tropical climate or setting you can add tasteful ambient lighting to your palm trees for an inviting look.
These lights can be what are known as task lighting which are more directional and highlight a given area or you can use softer more ambient light. If you really want to get creative you can use a combination of both to accent certain areas but giving the rest of the landscape a soft supplemental glow. The three core things you need to do any of these designs or setups is low voltage landscape lights and fixtures, low voltage cabling and have them all connected to low voltage transformers, that’s it. Ever since the economy boom of the 90’s landscape lighting and landscaping in general have boomed as a business and finding opulent homes with proper lighting has become commonplace, so take advantage of all the great varieties and prices out there and start lighting up your home.

Well, it’s a little more complicated than you make it sound. Just having the wire, transformer, and fixtures isn’t quite all you need. Making sure it’s the correct kind and gauge of wire is important. Making sure the transformer is sufficient to handle all the light fixtures you plan on installing now, and in the future, is important. It’s wise to use a hub – so that would be something else you’d want to buy. Also, an amp/volt meter is important because if the fixtures have too little voltage they will not illuminate properly and will burn out quickly with too much voltage. There is actually a whole toolbox full of tools that I carry just for working on outdoor lighting, along with a box full of different kinds of lamps for replacement and for tweaking installations.
